project:

Timekeeper

role:

Branding & Game Designer

timeframe:

January—March 2020

Background

“Timekeeper” was the first project of my Spring 2020 graphic design class. The concept for the game is based on the value of time and has a playthrough similar to “Dungeons & Dragons.” Players take turns rolling dice, drawing cards, and performing actions on those cards. Gameplay ends once a player has gone around the board 10 times (equal to 40 years). Each part of the game is hand-crafted including the wooden box. Easily, my favorite project to date.

Challenges

This project contained many firsts. No lack of challenges here!

  • Learning new processes (quilting/woodworking/screenprinting)
  • Branding
  • Project planning + research
  • Time management

Results

Making “Timekeeper” completely from scratch was a conceptual decision. Being about the value of time, it was important to spend as much time as possible in the creation of the game. Quilt making is the most time and labor intensive process I could think of. So it became the process I used to make the game board. The same reasoning was applied for all the pieces. Doing this shows a physical representation of time, hopefully increasing the players’ respect for time.
